JOCO 42
Record: 3-0 (1-0 Region)
Next Week: at Wilkinson County
September 16: at Savannah Country Day
September 23: BYE WEEK
Game Notes:
After a sixteen and a half hour delay due to inclement weather and unsafe travel conditions due to Hurricane Hermine, the Johnson County Trojans beat the AAA team Groves Rebels out of Savannah by a score of 48-12 in a Saturday morning matinee. The Trojans improved to 3-0 on the year after the win.
JOCO jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the 1st half due to a pair of Brooks Norton (#8, JR) rushing touchdowns and a Ty Cannon (#14, SO) pick-six off of Groves QB Dayday Peters. However, Groves was able to score on its own Pick 6 as time expired in the 1st half, and Johnson County went to the locker room with a 21-6 lead.
In the 2nd half, Groves pulled closer with an opening score, but the Trojans would then pull away while going on a 21-0 run with rushing touchdowns by Ran Norris (#10, JR) and Bran Rawlings (#9, JR) and another Groves Pick-6, this time by Rawlings. Groves would score late in the game to make the final score 42-18.
Johnson County finished with 336 total yards, while the defense was stingy as they only held Groves to 142 yards and forced two turnovers. Norton was 6-10 with 46 yards through the air, but had two touchdowns on the ground. Rushing was a team affair as Rawlings, Malik Pierce (#13, SR), Norris, and Jalen Johnson (#6, JR) all had good days rushing. Thomas Thornton (#22, SR) was the leading receiver with 26 yards on 2 receptions, and once again Jake Edwards (#12, JR) made all his extra points. Pierce led the defense with 6 tackles, while Jackson led the team in tackles for loss with 3.5.
Johnson County is finally back playing on Friday night, as they will travel to Irwinton and face the Wilkinson County Warriors at 7:30 PM on September 9. They are looking for their first win, but they have been battle tested as they have faced both Baldwin and Dublin. It should be a great challenge for both squads. Come out and support the Trojans! It’s just a short drive up HWY 57 to catch the game!
